Chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta)

Chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta)

Type of waters inhabited: Freshwater, Saltwater

The chum salmon, also known as keta salmon, is one of the most widely distributed species of salmon in the North Pacific Ocean. This fish can be found along both coasts, from Japan and Korea to Alaska and California. Like all salmon species, the keta is an anadromous fish, meaning it spends a significant portion of its life in the ocean and migrates up rivers to spawn. During migration, chum salmon can travel long distances, navigating rapids and waterfalls to reach their spawning grounds in native rivers.

Habitat

The ideal habitat for chum salmon includes cold, clean waters typically found in rivers and lakes that flow into the ocean. These fish prefer deep, oxygen-rich waters, usually at depths ranging from 10 to 200 meters but can also be found as deep as 375 meters. During their marine life, chum salmon primarily feed on zooplankton, small fish, and crustaceans. Juvenile specimens, known as fry, initially live in freshwater where they feed on insects and small aquatic organisms.

Fishing Techniques

To catch chum salmon, sport fishermen employ various effective techniques. Two of the most common are trolling and bottom fishing.

  • Trolling: This technique involves using live or artificial baits that are dragged behind a boat while navigating in waters known for salmon presence. Common baits include artificial lures that mimic the natural prey of salmon. It is important to maintain a steady speed while trolling to maximize catch chances. Using robust equipment is crucial since chum salmon can grow to considerable sizes and put up a strong fight.
  • Bottom Fishing: This technique consists of dropping a bait directly to the bottom of a river or lake near spawning areas. Ideal baits can include fresh sardines or squid. Fishermen need to use strong lines and appropriate weights to keep the bait in position. Patience is essential; often it is necessary to wait for the salmon to bite before setting the hook.

Catching chum salmon presents an exciting challenge for any sport fisherman. Understanding their habitat, employing appropriate fishing techniques, and selecting the right bait are fundamental elements for success. With proper preparation and a bit of luck, anglers can have unforgettable experiences while trying to catch this fascinating Pacific fish.
