Habitat

The snoek (Thyrsites atun), also known as Austral butterfish, is a marine bony fish belonging to the Gempylidae family. This pelagic predator is found in the temperate waters of the Southern Hemisphere, including the coasts of South Africa, southern Australia, Tasmania, New Zealand, and the southern coasts of South America, up to Peru and Uruguay.

The snoek prefers waters with temperatures between 13°C and 18°C. It primarily inhabits pelagic zones, often near the continental shelf, occupying water layers close to the seabed or mid-water. During nighttime, it tends to move closer to the surface to feed. This behavior makes it accessible to both commercial and sport fishing.

Baits

• Live fish baits: herring, sardines, and anchovies are common snoek prey and serve as ideal baits.
